OCM 11G Planning (1)

My first stage of preparation needs to be planned. I will be concentrating on parts of the Database, RMAN, EM and Network Configuration exam topic during the build of the gridctrl server.

Database, RMAN, EM and Network Configuration

Configure server-side network

Since the database on the gridctrl server is a stand-alone instance, the server-side network is very basic. The real challenge comes when I move to a two (2) node RAC with Data Guard.

Configure client-side network

Again, the real challenge of a client-side network comes when I move to a two (2) node RAC with Data Guard.

Create and Manage encrypted tablespaces

Encrypted tablespaces are not part of this phase of planning.

Create and Manage a tablespace that uses NFS mounted file system file

Tablespaces on NFS are not part of this phase of planning.

Set up ADR file based repository

ADR file based repository will be set up as part of all database installations.

Perform cold database backup

After the database is set up, I will do a cold backup using RMAN (and a restoration using RMAN).

Manage user accounts and use case sensitive passwords

Case sensitive passwords will be set up as part of all database installations.

Use OPatch to install a patch

To install the Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.7 software, I will have to use OPatch on Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.6.

Install and configure EM Agent

Installing and configuring the EM Agent will be done as part of all database installations.

Create Base Recovery Catalog

The Base Recovery Catalog will be on the gridctrl server.

Configure RMAN

RMAN configuration will be done as part of all database installations.

Perform multisection backup of a datafile

I will leave multisection backup of a datafile until I build the main RAC database.

Create an Archival Backup

I will create an archival backup of all databases (and doing a complete recovery using the archival backup).

General Plan for GRIDCTRL

  1. Install Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.6 software
  2. Use OPatch to upgrade to Oracle RDBM 11.1.0.7 software
  3. Create a database called REPOS for the Infrastructure Repository Databases that will contain the OEM Grid Control repository and Base Recovery Catalog as per the recommendation from the Oracle® Database Licensing Information 11g Release 1 (11.1).
  4. The REPOS database will use case-sensitive passwords.
  5. Install the OEM Grid Control Server 10.2.0.5 on gridctrl. This should automatically install the agent as well. The repository will be in REPOS database.
  6. Create a RMAN base recovery catalog in the REPOS database.
  7. Perform a cold backup of the REPOS database.
  8. Restore the REPOS database from the cold backup.
  9. Perform an archival backup of the REPOS database.
  10. Recover the REPOS database from the archival backup.

    • Adnan,

If the topic is not mentioned in the list of topics, then that topic is not tested.

When I took the exam, there was a detailed list of topics. I have just checked the certification page and found the topics reduced to four (4) areas. The original list of topics can be found here.

However, there is assumed knowledge like:

      • stopping and starting databases;
      • backup and recovering databases;
      • diagnosing errors
      • finding and interpreting logs
      • using SQL*Plus
      • using Grid Control
      • using Linux commands

These are the same skills you would needed for the 10G OCM exam.

I have updated my OCM Questions and Answers with this entry

      Douglas
