11G OCM OPatch 11.1.0.7 on GRIDCTRL

Now, Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.6.0 will be upgraded to Oracle RDBMS 11.1.0.7.0.

The following sections refer to Oracle® Database Patch Set Notes 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.7) Patch Set 1 for Linux x86 which are in README.html file of the p6890831 zip file (see 11G OCM Downloads).

1 Patch Set Overview

This patch will only be applied to Oracle Database.

2 Critical Patch Updates

Since GRIDCTRL is only a test system, I will not be applying a Critical Patch Update following the 11.1.0.7.0 patch.

3 Accessing the Latest Version of this Document

Since GRIDCTRL is only a test system, I will not be reviewing the latest version of MetaLink document 454507.1.

4 Oracle Universal Installer Version Requirements

I am installing this patch into an existing Oracle Database 11g (11.1.0.6) installation (see Oracle RDBMS 11G 11.1.0.6.0 Installation).

5 Patch Set Documentation

Since this patching is a practice exercise, I will not be reviewing MetaLink document 454507.1.

6 System Requirements

I can safely assume that RHEL 5.4 is supported because RHEL 5.2 is a requirement of the OCM upgrade examination.

7 Preinstallation Tasks

7.1 Review Known Preinstallation Issues

7.1.1 Upgrading Oracle E-Business Suite Databases

Not applicable.

7.1.2 Upgrading Oracle Clusterware

This is not applicable because there is no clusterware installed.

7.1.3 Using ASM Rolling Upgrades

This is not applicable because there is no ASM installed.

7.1.4 Cloning an Oracle Clusterware Home

This is not applicable because there is no clusterware installed.

7.1.5 Notes to Oracle OLAP Users

This is not applicable because the Oracle OLAP feature is not installed.

This could be an issue in the OCM 11G upgrade exam because data warehouse expertise is tested.

7.1.6 Notes to Oracle Text Users

This is not applicable because the Oracle Text feature is not installed.

7.2 Identify the Oracle Database Installation

/opt/oracle/app/product/11.1.0/db_1

7.3 Check Postrelease Updates

Metalink document 454507.1 again!

7.4 Download and Extract the Installation Software

Already downloaded when I did 11G OCM Downloads, and unzipped into /opt/oracle/software/p6890831.

7.5 Update Oracle Time Zone Definitions

Not applicable because there is no database created yet.

This could be an issue in the OCM 11G upgrade exam because I may have to patch an existing 11.1.0.6.0 database.

7.6 Set the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID Environment Variables

The actions in 11G OCM .bash_profile for GRIDCTRL satisfies most of these commands, except for (the README file is wrong):

$ export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/OPatch:$PATH:

7.7 Stop All Processes

This whole section is not applicable because no database or listener have been created yet.

7.8 Back Up the System

$ cd $ORACLE_BASE
$ zip -r -y p6890831_bkup product
...
$ ls -l *.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 oracle oinstall 1778566564 Nov 25 20:11 p6890831_bkup.zip

8 Installation Tasks

8.1 Installing the Oracle Database 11g Patch Set Interactively

  1. Already logged in as oracle
  2. Am installing on the local computer
  3. Starting the installer
  4. $ cd /opt/oracle/software/p6890831/Disk1
    $ ./runInstaller

  5. Clicked next on welcome screen
  6. Specify Home Details – no changes
  7. Page left blank as Oracle Configuration Manager is not part of the OCM 11G Upgrade Exam
  8. Confirmed my willingness to remain ignorant of security updates
  9. No errors in Product-Specific Prerequisite Checks
  10. Ran root.sh script.
  11. # /opt/oracle/app/product/11.1.0/db_1/root.sh
    Running Oracle 11g root.sh script...

    The following environment variables are set as:
        ORACLE_OWNER= oracle
        ORACLE_HOME=  /opt/oracle/app/product/11.1.0/db_1

    Enter the full pathname of the local bin directory: [/usr/local/bin]:
    The file "dbhome" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: y
       Copying dbhome to /usr/local/bin ...
    The file "oraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: y
       Copying oraenv to /usr/local/bin ...
    The file "coraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin. Overwrite it? (y/n)
    [n]: y
       Copying coraenv to /usr/local/bin ...

    Entries will be added to the /etc/oratab file as needed by
    Database Configuration Assistant when a database is created
    Finished running generic part of root.sh script.
    Now product-specific root actions will be performed.
    Finished product-specific root actions.

  12. Patching successful

9 Postinstallation Tasks

None of these tasks are applicable because there is no existing database. I will have to revisit these when I get around to the real database.

10 Removing the Patch Set Software

I will have to practise the removal of the patch set on a real database, because in the current circumstances, I just have to unzip the backup file to do a backout.

11 Reinstalling the Patch Set Software

This will be a real downer if I had to do a re-installation of the patch in the OCM 11G Upgrade exam.

12 Known Issues

These apply only if upgrade or downgrade an existing database.

Conclusion

I have done the patch successfully. I have partially done one (1) exam topic. I will have to revisit this issue when I create the main RAC database as 11.1.0.6 and then do a rolling upgrade of clusterware, ASM, and RDBMS with complications due to OLAP and timezones.
