11G OCM Patch OEM 10.2.0.5 (2)

There was a problem with the configuration of the OEM Server in 11G OCM Patch OEM 10.2.0.5 (1). I think I may have a fix.

Problem Investigation

I used Oracle Support to search on the following string:

oracle.ias.sysmgmt.exception.TaskException: Base Exception

The hit at MetaLink Doc ID 549357.1 (“Web Cache Configuration Assistant” Failed with the Following Error: Failed in smi manipulation()) looks promising:

  1. The problem text matches the error message
  2. The contents of /etc/hosts matches the problem origin (the highlighted line could be the problem):
  3. # Do not remove the following line, or various programs
    # that require network functionality will fail.
    127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain localhost
    #::1            localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
    10.1.2.200 gridctrl gridctrl.yaocm.id.au
    10.1.2.201 penrith1 penrith1.yaocm.id.au
    10.1.2.202 penrith2 penrith2.yaocm.id.au
    10.1.2.203 bankstwn bankstwn.yaocm.id.au

Problem Resolution

I changed /etc/hosts to look like (the changed lines are highlighted):

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain localhost
#::1            localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
10.1.2.200 gridctrl.yaocm.id.au gridctrl
10.1.2.201 penrith1.yaocm.id.au penrith1
10.1.2.202 penrith2.yaocm.id.au penrith2
10.1.2.203 bankstwn.yaocm.id.au bankstwn

This failed when I tried to do a DNS look up via:

dig gridctrl.yaocm.id.au

The command output showed that the /etc/hosts file was not consulted (the error message and the name servers consulted are highlighted):

; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5 <<>> gridctrl.yaocm.id.au
;; global options:  printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 59260

;; WHEN: Sun Dec 27 16:44:25 2009

Looks like I will have to set up a named server on gridctrl.
