Inc Magazine has an interesting article on 2 Interview Questions That Separate the Doers from the Poseurs by Lou Adler.
Back when I was Team Leader, these two (2) questions were somewhat similar to what I asked when I was interviewing DBAs:
- I would give the candidate a screen-shot of the Grid Control Top Activity page for a database instance, and ask the candidate;
- “Is there a problem here?”
- “If so, what is it?”
- “How would you go about fixing it?”
- How did they did do it?
- What was the impact on their employer?
The surprising thing was how many DBAs focused on the wrong problem. Even with prompting, they could see the real problem.
As for the greatest achievement, I had one candidate who said they were lucky. It was not a case of fortune favouring the prepared, but just that they tried some random thing, and it worked!
